What's the buzz...in July at Diggin' It
Diggin' Sculpture - for Kids!! Sessions Daily July 11th - July 15th, 9:30am-12:00pm Class Fee: $140 Did your child miss out on the fun of Kid's Home Eckie or Diggin' Paint? Not to worry! Another series of kid's art classes taught by Kathryn Waite is coming up, this time introducing students to the fundamentals of art in three dimensions! Students will use papier mache as their main sculpting medium as they work on projects to develop their understanding of three-dimensional visualization. Using armatures, wire, paper, and other recyclable materials, students will be able to translate their ideas and drawings into 3-D works of art. Those who are interested can begin to collect found objects NOW to recycle into art during this class! Kids ages 6 and up. |

In this weeklong series of 5 daily classes, returning Diggin' It guru Christine Lindsay will be teaching kids the skills of home economics! Kids will learn the fundamentals of nutrition, cooking, and sewing and will even have the opportunity to make their own clothing: an apron for girls, or a toolbelt for boys. Let your child learn the skills of life while their imaginations run wild this summer!

In this class Fredda Perkins will guide you in lining the bowl of a small birdbath with broken china, giving a mosaic. In the process you will learn to use tile nippers, learn about the different glues and mastics used to adhere the pieces and how to grout your birdbath. All materials are provided. Wear old clothes; it can get a little messy.

Loving the history of it all and being part of it!!!
In the Spotlight: Diggin’ It, 507 N. Tennessee St.
A New Business Highlight by Guy Giersch, Historic Preservation Officer, City of McKinney
Quite often I look at old buildings and dream about how they can be reused. One building that I have admired
since I’ve been here is the former Greyhound Bus Station located at 507 N. Tennessee Street. This might seem an odd
place for a bus station, but remember, Tennessee Street - at one time - was a highway.
The building is an Art Deco style gas station that had once been owned by a gentleman affectionately known as
“Tubby” Moore. I wished I knew more about Mr. Moore; it seems many people thought very highly of him, and the
station served as a focal point for community news.
Eventually, the gas station became the McKinney Greyhound Bus Terminal. Bus service at that location began in 1959. As late as 2006, I would drive by and see people waiting for the bus or witness happy greetings being
extended to arriving loved ones. For over 40 years, the bus provided an important means of transportation for many people in Collin County.
After Greyhound left McKinney, the old “Tubby” Moore filling station was left vacant. The station sat silent for a few years until Tracey Collins opened “Diggin’ It” in July of 2010. The business has built on the joy and happiness
that was created by “Tubby” Moore and all of the family greeting encounters at the bus station.
As soon as you arrive, you will be greeted by an overpowering experience of color. The visual feast is like walking into a wet Jackson Pollock painting: thick, gooey, and rich. You can hear Brody, the “Diggin’ It Dog,” waiting to
greet you. This fun and funky bohemian place offers the finest in eclectic home décor.
Besides the eclectic home décor, you can also purchase plants. After all “Diggin’ It” is all about digging in it. This is the place to get quality herbs and flowers as well as information about how to start your garden. You can also
take classes to learn how to grow your plants, establish an organic garden, collect rainwater, make a birdbath, or even learn how to cook the food you grow.
Yes, the old station is alive and well, demonstrating how buildings can be adapted to new uses that enhance our lives while promoting sustainability. Drop by to see Tracey, and make sure you scratch Brody’s belly.

- Free, fresh, rainwater is yours for the taking! Rainwater collecting is very easy to do in your own backyard. Rainwater is free, clean, has no use restrictions, and plants love it! Learn how to set up a simple rainwater collection system in your own backyard and find out how easy it is to collect and recycle one of nature's most threatened natural resources. Participants of this FREE program will be eligible for a door prize of a free rain barrel and downspout diverter! Additional rainwater harvesting products will be made available for sale at a reduced price.
- Taught by Beth Mortenson, Chief Rainmaker of Catch the Rain, LLC, and a Licensed Texas Irrigator and Accredited Professional by the American Rainwater Catchment Systems Association. Beth runs a local and internet-based company that specializes in residential rainwater harvesting systems. She specializes in composting, plant propagation, and sustainable gardening. She holds a BA in Government and Political Science. Beth has spoken on numerous occasions concerning rainwater collection, rain gardens, efficient irrigation, composting, sustainable gardens, and various other topics concerning eco-friendly gardening. Several of her articles on these topics have been published.

Great Class...Great Teacher...Great Students!!!
The Organic Gardening for Backyard Gardens class was quite the success.
Thank you Steve Diver...Sustainable Ag Guru of the world!!! There were lot's of wonderfully positive comments about his class.
Our third Diggin' It class...31 people...woohoo!! Steve showed us the Brix method of checking the nutrient density of the Diggin' It lettuce...very interesting. Beautiful spring flowers have arrived. He showed us all sorts of ways to reduce, reuse and recycle old saucers into magical, little, lettuce gardens. Precious Ella in her Diggin' It uniform...love, love, love it..... hippie headband and all!!! Recycling old flats into seeding starters..no need to buy new... reuse! IMG_7662.JPG Thanks to all who came. It was a gloriously beautiful day. Thank you Steve. You are one knowledgeable gardening Guru! Herbs, herbs and more herbs in the burbs...
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme....makes me want to sing!!! Herbs, veggie transplants... pak choy, heirloom tomatoes, broccoli, lettuce and radichio are inbound ...via greyhound (not really) Brody now looks like a greyhound thanks to a questionable grooming. He's been sheared like a sheep!!! Enough about the Diggin' It dog... Don't forget the Veg 101 class this Saturday. Typo on the calendar, the class is $10. Come veg out!

Sandra Byrne will share tips on what you need to get ready for the best veggie garden ever - including how to prepare beds, building the perfect compost, and more! She will also provide tips on growing vegetable varieties suited to our Texas climate, along with harvesting and cooking information. Grow your own and live a healthier lifestyle!

An empty nest means time to retrain yourself in cooking for you and loving the process, not just the food. Use fresh herbs from Diggin' It and simple spices to roast meats and vegetables. Get inspired to create new recipes every time you cook! Great sampling of herb roasted veggies and recipes to take home. Taught by Christine Lindsay.
Raised Beds for Backyard Organic Gardening
Saturday March 19th, 10am-12pm
Class Fee: $10
McKinney gardeners will have an opportunity to dig into raised bed gardening on March 19th. Learn how to produce high yielding, nutrient dense vegetable gardens in raised beds by enriching the soil with fertility and biology. Or blend your own potting mix to grow vegetables in containers and create a patio garden. Topics will address raised bed methods, organic fertilizers, building your own nursery mix, integrating minerals and biology for nutritious vegetables, gardening tips, and more!
The speaker, Steve Diver, is a former Extension Horticulturist with Oklahoma State University who has worked in organic agriculture the last 22 years. Steve has published and taught widely on permaculture, organic fruit and vegetable production, the soil foodweb, composts and compost teas, & soil fertility. He established Agri-Horticultural & Organic Consulting, an Austin-based firm, in 2010.
